Today, I
just feel like sharing with you all my salvation experience as a very young
girl in secondary school.
I was born
into a Christian home where we normally have devotion every morning at 5.00am. My dad rings the prayer bell and everyone must
come out for early morning prayers. We also do not miss church during the week
and every Sunday. My mother thought us to read the Bible in our mother tongue
and I have a grandmother who always tells us Bible stories like folktales. So I
have been conscious of God right from childhood.
But coming
from a Christian background or being God conscious is not tantamount to
accepting Christ as Lord and personal savior. They are two different things.
Yes I pray, read the Bible daily, go to church and always try to be a good girl
but I never knew I had to personally commit my life to Christ and accept Him as
my Lord and Saviour.
So when I
got into secondary school, I joined the school fellowship which was handled
then by The Student Christian Movement (SCM). Not long after we resumed school, SCM
organized a weekend camp programme at Mate Nursery and Primary School, Ketu
Lagos. I went in the company of other children to the camp ground and it was a
very exciting period for me. We got there Friday evening and settled into our
hostels. After dinner we were to watch a film. That film changed my life
completely.
I have forgotten
the title of the film. But it’s all about a seven year old boy living with his
grandmother. They were poor and the grandmother did petty trading to keep
spirit and soul together. They lived in a town which normally experience a
recurrent natural disaster – flooding.
A young
missionary visited the town and got interested in the little boy. He made sure
the boy started attending school and instructed the boy to always come to him
for anything they need. He also led them to Christ and made sure they attend
church regularly.
One day the
boy’s grandmother fell seriously ill and the boy did not know what to do. He
started crying and his grandmother told him to go and call the young
missionary. Unknown to the boy and his grandmother, the ocean has over flown its
boundaries and the whole town was becoming flooded. As the boy was running
towards the young missionary’s house, the flood was coming towards his
direction. God so good, the young missionary saw the boy and the danger he was
in from afar, so he started running towards his direction. The flood was coming
with full force and it hits a big rock. The rock started coming down directly
on the boy. The young missionary saw that the rock was going to hit the boy so
he ran with all his might and covered the boy. The rock fell right on the young
missionary’s head instead of the boy. He died on the spot. The missionary gave
up his life for the boy.
We were all
in tears. The light came on and one of the uncles started explaining the film
to us. He told us that we were all sinners deserving death because the wages of
sin is death. Just as the young missionary died in place of that young boy,
Christ died in our stead. So if we decide to forsake our sinful ways, yield our
lives to Him and ask him to be our Lord and Saviour, He will come into our
lives and we will be saved and born again, free from sin and partakers of
eternal life. The altar call was called and I came out. That was how I gave my
life to Christ and became born again. That was when I knew Christ actually came
to die in my stead to deliver me from the consequence of sin which is death.
And since then He has been my source and provider. My constant help in the time
of need. I owe Him my life and entire existence.
Have you
accepted him as your Lord and Saviour. You might be asking “why do I have to accept
Christ as my Lord and Savior?” The first
reason is for you to have Eternal Life. I believe you know that you are a
spirit being. When man dies his body returns to dust from which it was created
and the spirit goes back to God to give an account of what it has done in the
flesh.
“So then each of us shall give an account
of himself to God” Romans 14:12 NKJV.
What account
are you going to give your Maker? Man was created to give God pleasure. Have
you lived your life glorifying Him or pleasing yourself and indulging in sin?
Remember, the wages of sin is death.
The second
reason you need Christ is for your security here on earth. We live in a very
wicked world.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and
blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly
places.”Epheshian 6:12 NKJV.
Can you please
tell me how you hope to combat the devil and his wicked principalities without
Jesus.? Only His name overcomes the devil and his hosts.
“Therefore God also has highly
exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name
of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and
of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Phillippians 2:9-11 NKJV.
So what are
you waiting for? Jesus loves you. Accept him today and start to enjoy the
abundant life he has to offer. Shalom.
